Do you know how much water are you wasting on your car?

Most of the cities in India including metro cities have had some level of water crisis in the past. Every year we see the stats where the groundwater level especially in densely populated cities of India is decreasing. Tall buildings and structures have given rise to sink bore wells as deep as 1000 feet in cities like Delhi, Mumbai & Bangalore.

According to a survey by World Resources Institute, the amount of freshwater available for us to consume is only 1% of the total water on Earth (excluding water stuck in glaciers). This constitutes all the available fresh water in the world.

“We forget the water cycle and life cycle are one”
– Jacques Cousteau

Although everyone is aware of the fact that wasting water is bad, many people do not truly understand why. In addition to higher water bills, shortage of fresh water, decreasing ground water level, etc. wasting water also causes a very bad impact to the environment and other living beings.

There are a lot of ways in which we waste water every day and we don’t even realize. Some of them include:

–  Daily household situations like taking long showers, leaving the tap open while brushing, over usage of water to wash utensils, etc.

–  Industrial situations like cleaning, not recycling, not having sewage water treatment, washing machinery, clean utensils in canteen, etc.

–  Other situations like not fixing leaking pipes, over usage of water for agricultural purposes, washing driveway, etc.

There is one other way we waste a lot of water – WASHING OUR CAR!

Some of us waste huge amounts of water by washing cars every day and others on a weekly basis. But, the problem is that we waste water in washing cars which can otherwise be done without using any water!

Here are some of the facts that might amaze you:

–  On an average, we use around 10-15 litres of water to wash our car. That’s 105 litres in a week, 3150 litres in a month and 37,800 litres a year.

–  So every year, to wash one car we use almost 70% of the water that a human being consumes throughout his life (14,600 Gallons).

–  By not using buckets of water to wash our car (around 9 litres), we can beat 0.000008% water scarcity in India (only 4% of total population in India have access to fresh water).

–  Bengaluru is second largest city in terms of water wastage. There are around 10 lakh cars and 10 crore litres of water wasted to wash them. That’s like draining Bellandur lake 50 times. (Source: The Hindu Business Line)

–  14 lakes that existed in Bengaluru 30 years back have gone dry today because of density of population and wastage (Source: Wikipedia).

–  On an average, residents of Bengaluru use 100 litres of water everyday out of which only 20 litres are used for consumption and the other 80% is wasted for bathing, washing car, etc. (Source: BBC News)
